Research Technician
Job Description
We’re partnering with a prestigious university to find a skilled and motivated Research Technician to support their Refining Technologies research team. This is a hands-on technical role where no two days are the same. You’ll assist with experimental setups, operate and maintain advanced testing equipment, and help drive research that contributes to real-world innovations in refining technologies.
The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, detail-oriented, and enjoys troubleshooting complex systems. This is a great opportunity to combine your technical expertise with meaningful, research-driven work in a collaborative academic setting.
Occasional evenings/weekends may be required a few times per year for testing projects.
Pay Range: $20–$28/hour, depending on experience
Key Responsibilities

Set up, operate, and shut down laboratory and pilot-scale research equipment.

Assist in developing and following experimental operating procedures.

Support graduate students and research staff during testing and data collection.

Monitor, record, and verify experimental data for accuracy and completeness.

Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on pumps, compressors, furnaces, boilers, chillers, control valves, and related systems.

Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and process issues in high-pressure, high-temperature environments.

Build or modify test systems and facilities as needed; maintain adequate inventory of parts and consumables.

Ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations across all research activities.
Job Requirements
Qualifications

2-year Technical Degree or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience

8–12+ years of related technical experience; prior leadership or mentoring experience is a plus

Strong mechanical aptitude with basic-to-advanced electrical and electronic troubleshooting skills

Familiarity with pumps, compressors, furnaces, boilers, chillers, control valves, and related systems in high-pressure, high-temperature environments

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, procedures, and schematics

Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

Excellent teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities

Capable of managing multiple priorities and projects simultaneously with strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality standards

Adherence to OSHA and environmental safety regulations

Ability to perform moderate physical activity as required

Flexibility for occasional evening, weekend, or overtime work during testing periods
