Job Description

We are currently looking to fill a Director of Accounting and Payroll position for a client in the higher education sector. This role is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing financial reporting, payroll, audits, and compliance while driving efficiency and process improvements.

Location: Tulsa, Oklahoma

About the Role

The Director of Accounting and Payroll will manage financial operations, ensure compliance with accounting standards, and lead payroll processing. This position plays a vital role in maintaining accuracy, efficiency, and financial integrity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead monthly financial close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Oversee cash management, investments, bond and debt activities.
  • Manage and ensure timely, accurate payroll processing while maintaining compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Collaborate with external auditors to ensure successful audits and financial compliance.
  • Analyze financial statements, variances, and budget alignment for strategic decision-making.
  • Provide leadership in financial system upgrades, ERP utilization, and process improvements.
  • Ensure GAAP compliance, proper classification, and recording of all financial transactions.
  • Assist with tax return preparation and coordinate with the audit and treasury teams.

Job Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required
  • Experience using ERP and accounting systems
  • Strong financial analysis, reporting, and compliance knowledge
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education or nonprofit accounting
  • Proven success in managing financial projects and system implementations
